April 22, 2004

Another month passes with The Gentlemen far apart. Have years gone by since we last threw our varied musics into the ears of an unknowing passerby? Since we last saw said passerby contort his face into a smile, reach his skinny arms into his still skinnier change-purse, and toss a nickel our way? Does The Councilman still counsel? Does Smilin' Andy Bean still smile? Indeed, they do!

April has never been kind to The Gentlemen. Too often have we settled ourselves on a street corner only to be assaulted by a famous, 'April Shower'. To the outdoor troubadour, rain is not kind. It soils the suit, warps the instrument, and fills the money-hat not with dollars, but with water and gloom. Must we have twelve months, all with different weather? Why not just two months; one short and chilly, the other long and warm? In his approval of the Julian calendar, the Lord has erred.

However, though April found The Gentlemen apart, it did not find them idle. The Councilman, thinking himself too much a prisoner of the rechargeable battery that amplifies his bass guitar, had a northern luthier send a gargantuan bull-fiddle. So, while competing acts remain tethered to the coal-fired shocks that shoot from every wall, The Gentlemen run now on man-power alone!

Til another day,
-S. Andy Bean
